Geary Market

At the end of the nineteenth century, Geary Boulevard was bookended by the now-demolished Sutro Baths and Union Square in downtown San Francisco. The scheme proposes the first civic intervention in over a century at the midpoint of the Geary corridor, at the site of a private bank parking lot.

The project excavates a city block to create an urban space. The form is driven by an open market type: two voids are extracted to create open and covered zones for shared public use. Elemental slabs, walls and columns create layers of enclosure for market vendors; dramatizing the interplay between inside and outside.
